Instructor: Michael Ceryak - Certified Malte Marten Method Handpan Teacher
Location: My Home or Your Home
Online available as well
Lesson Frequency: Weekly (Recommended)
You are: A beginner, just learning the handpan with some or no prior experience. It is ok and expected that you have never touched a handpan before.
Content & Objectives: I will meet you exactly where you are on your handpan journey — whether you’re just beginning or already have some experience. Together, we’ll explore:
Foundations: Handpan setup, posture, tone control, and basic striking techniques.
Warm-ups & Exercises: Simple patterns to develop touch, timing, and coordination.
Beats & Melodies: Learning rhythmic structures, scales, and melodic phrasing.
Flow Development: Moving naturally between rhythms and melodies with ease.
Improvisation: Building confidence to express yourself freely in the moment.
Composition: Creating your own patterns and pieces with structure and emotion.
Advanced Techniques: Integrating slaps, knocks, harmonics, and dynamic textures.
We’ll go at a pace that supports balanced learning and integration. The goal is for you to feel comfortable picking up a handpan and creating your own soothing yet exciting rhythms — blending melody, harmony, and percussive expression with confidence and joy.
Equipment Requirements: You’ll need a D Kurd handpan (9, 10, 13, etc.). It must be a D Kurd and not another scale, since all the lesson plans are tailored to this scale. It is a very popular and beginner-friendly scale. If you don’t have one, you can rent one from me (limited, see cost below), or I can provide you with a promo code at the Yatao Shop.
Cost: First lesson is FREE (I’ll bring a handpan for you if you need one). Then, it is $30 / 45-minute lesson. If renting a handpan from me, that is an extra $20 / week.
